By Stephanie Devereaux -- Amendment One goes for a vote before the electorate of North Carolina, with the last day for early voting today, May 5, 2012, and the vote proper taking place on May 9, 2012. This proposed amendment may be the most draconian of those being proposed -- in that it would ban civil unions and domestic partnerships of all kinds -- denying them legal status and in fact outlawing them -- with all the ramifications imaginable as a result.
Somewhere along the line, inspired by conservative political wins in the House of Representatives
in Congress and conservatives taking control of state legislatures across the nation, extreme right wingers and evangelists decide that the time was now or never to attempt to merge church and state by pushing for their religious beliefs to become the civil, secular law of the land.
It appears that the lunatic religious fringe has convinced itself that the way to overturn
the separation of church and state mandate of the constitution is to simply ignore that constitutional requirement and go ahead and make the practice of life-styles and spiritual beliefs contrary to their own -- illegal in this secular country. . .
I guess it is put up or shut up time for North Carolinians
and a huge red alert for the rest of the country that we have a religious fringe group battling to take control of the government at the state level and make their religious beliefs the law of the land.. .
I thought the 1000 years battle between shias and sunnis in Iraq over which
line of descendants from Mohammad was the authentic heir apparent to religious superiority and primacy was about as absurd a thing as I had ever seen on earth -- and was greatly comforted by the fact that the country in which that absurdity was playing itself out with blood, murder, and mayhem was in a far away part of the world and of minimal relevance to my life. Now I am forced to watch an eerily similar craziness and religious zealotry surfacing in internecine battle in these United States -- as if there was a full blown battle for soul of America a foot in the land. In actuality, it is just a fanatic bunch of genetically damaged crazies trip pushing their cultish beliefs on the rest of us -- as if something remarkable in the values and way of life had entitled them to play God (make the Hitler) for the rest of us. . .
Said simply: No thanks -- you imbeciles and cretins!
Please huddle in your plastic religious castles and mumble jumble amongst yourselves over which hocus-pocus rituals you are going to champion. Not in my life -- and hopefully -- not on our planet!
