By Johnny Tremaine --
Mario Rubio said Barack was divisive. Most divisive President in the history of the United States, he said. Really? Two bits says he doesn't even know the history of the United States -- and probably can't name half the Presidents -- or when they were President. But what should we expect out of an ex-Mormon, right wing, non-Spanish speaking Cuban from Florida who is suddenly speaking out about our first African-American President like he actually had something to add to the conversation.
I mean -- the day of Barack Obama's inauguration, Mitch McConnell called a press conference
and declared that the top objective and primary focus of the Republican party for the indeterminate future was to see to it that Barack Obama was a one term President. And they have been working that plan ever since. They would bring down the government if that's what it took to get him out.
Romney says Obama just doesn't understand business.
Just doesn't get America. Chuckles that maybe it's because he has that -- you know -- Harvard degree and everything (Romney has two Harvard degrees). Newt said he was a dangerous European socialist -- and a Kenyan.
The Tea Party whackos say he wasn't born here --
and they don't believe he was smart enough to go to all those fancy schools on his own merit. Had to be that "Affirmative Action" thing. And that he really didn't get those "A's" everybody says he did. Disregard the fact that most of those morons only got degrees, if they did, because their parents bought them one. And they sure as hell didn't not get many A's, I'm betting. Certainly not George Bush. Or Jeb.
They say he is a socialist, a food stamps president, the biggest budget buster and deficit creator we've ever had.
They say the stimulus didn't work. And that he took a bad economy and made it worse. They say he is "dangerous", racist, and sinister. They say he has a strange past -- even ate dogs in Indonesia while he was going to the Madrassas being indoctrinated as a Muslim. They say he says he's a Christian, but he's definitely not Christian (now that's probably a plus -- considering how the so-called 'Christians" conduct themselves these days). They say he secretly loves Iran, and wants only to "appease" terrorists. Osama Bin Laden was all about that.
Because President Obama publicly spoke out in support of equality in marriage and in favor of basic
human and civil rights for everyone -- they now say his is gay. First African-American President. First muslim, socialist, Kenyan, openly gay President.
The Republicans say he is "different" (yeah, we know -- he's black), and that he is "angry" (you know angry blacks
-- scary) sometimes. The say he is glib, silver-tongued, and a celebrity -- an elitist -- the kind we hate. They says he has increased the budget deficit of the United States more in three years than all the other Presidents of the United States in history -- combined.
I mean if these guys were not national political leaders saying these things it would be hysterical.
The fact that they are makes it a sobering -- fairly tragic and sad state of affairs for our hopes for effective and sane government in a time frame that is meaningful for our lives.
I don't honestly know what happens when a country reaches the mysterious tipping point -
- when public life, economic complexity, and conflicting wishes, wants, hopes, desires, and aspirations get so chaotic and so full of conflict that it becomes impossible to govern the country. When we can't have elections and send people to Washington and have them accomplish anything. It would be something resembling what would be going on in Congress and the state legislatures if suddenly one year 80 or 90 percent of politicians came down with "hoof and mouth" -- or "mad-cow disease" and the next thing we knew was that all that was happening in the way of government was crazy, erratic politicians running around babbling, making faces, pointing -- and then crapping all over everything in the capitol and finger painting in it -- instead of -- or while governing. But basically, we are seeing it now -- in political terms. And although I think that the American voter is beginning to figure out what has happened and what has gone wrong -- the tens and hundreds of millions of dollars being poured into politics at all levels (thanks to Citizens United and the U.S. Supreme Court) have created such a cacophony and confusion that it may be that normal people just cannot process the level of dishonesty, greed, and self-serving charade in the national mad scramble for the last financial spoils of an America the rich and super rich are trying to part out and salvage and claim for themselves -- as their next great money making machines come on line abroad and their next new money empire begins in places somewhere other than the United States.
But I know this -- most of us who were born here -- and were not born Mitt Romneys -- feel like America was the only real chance we ever had -- or ever will have -- so when the moment comes -- don't be too surprised if we are willing to die for the dream we thought we had -- but never really did! Sometimes it is just the hope that your dream is real that keeps you playing by the rules -- even though you know deep down you're losing -- and it keeps us encouraging our children and grandchildren to believe. But what will happen if we finally ever admit to ourselves that it was never going to be true for us -- was never meant to be. Not for our lives.
